Reykjavik

Iceland: Reykjavik

One of the top sites of Iceland is the capital city of Iceland: Reykjavik.
This is the northernmost capital city in the whole world, and it’s essential to see when you want the Icelandic experience.
As legend has it, Norse gods guided Iceland’s first settler, Ingolfur Arnarson, to make his home in what is today the capital city of Iceland.
He named the Icelandic city Reykjavik, or “smoky bay”, due to the misty geothermal steam.
Today, it’s one of the cleanest cities in the world.

The Blue Lagoon of Iceland

Iceland: Places - Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon of Iceland is the spot where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia are slowly separating.
Iceland is right in the middle! From this spot in Iceland you can even walk on a bridge from America to Europe! I’m not kidding.
Witness first-hand the steaming geothermal activity!
Iceland is the place where nature really comes to life.

The Golden Circle of Iceland

Iceland: Places - Hveragerdi

In Iceland, the Golden Circle is a 190 mile route that encompasses all the most famous sites of Iceland.
You can even complete Iceland’s Golden Circle within one day.
There are plenty of Icelandic hotels and campsites along the route as well. You’ll come across the Icelandic greenhouses at Hveragerdi, and the pseudo crater Kerid.

Geysers of Iceland

Iceland: Geysier Strokur

Did you know that the English word “geyser” comes from the Icelandic word “geyser”?
That’s because Iceland is the home of a great many impressive geysers. But the word itself comes from one Icelandic geyser in particular located in the South West of Iceland.
It is literally called “Geysir” but hasn’t been pouring-out as much in past years.
But don’t be discouraged. Visit nearby Strokkur and see its 100 foot blast!

Waterfall of Gullfoss in Iceland

Iceland: Places - River Hvita

Gullfoss means “Golden Falls” in Iceland, and it’s an impressive 105 foot double waterfall that plummets into the tempestuous Hvita glacial Icelandic river below. It is one of the sites on Iceland’s Golden Circle and Europe’s largest waterfall. On a sunny day in Iceland, the mist from the falls creates dozens of shimmering rainbows in the sky.
In the Icelandic winter, the outside edges of the falls freeze and create magical patterns and formations of ice. Never have you beheld a site so magical and timeless.
Don’t forget to bring your camera, because this is an image you’ll want to share with friends and family for the rest of your life.
